Marina of 1600 berths inside the Cherbourg roadstead, Normandy, sheltered by the largest artificial harbour in the world.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Entry through the Passe de l'Ouest or Passe de l'Est of the Grande Rade, then south towards the marina basin. Maximum draught 3 m at the pontoons. Accessible at all tides. Tidal streams run hard off both entrance passes and in the approach, where there is ship and ferry traffic, so time the entry to the stream. Watch for fishing boats leaving the roadstead with AIS switched off and for pots laid inside the harbour. VHF 9 for the harbourmaster.

Practical

1600 berths including 240 for visitors. Fuel berth open year-round with diesel and petrol. Water and electricity at all pontoons, though shore power needs the pedestal button pressed every 24 hours or it cuts out. Travel-lift and boatyard on site, with ship chandlers, sailmakers and riggers around the basin. A launderette by the basin is open until 21h. Berthing is on the dear side for the area, around 52 euros for a 12 m boat. The pontoon gates are not always locked, so keep valuables secured.

Ashore

Cité de la Mer maritime museum with the submarine Le Redoutable, 400 m from the pontoons. Open-air markets fill the town on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and the monumental Basilique de la Trinité stands just outside the port. Town centre with shops and restaurants from 500 m. Ferry terminal to Portsmouth, Poole and Rosslare at the eastern end of the harbour.

History

The Cherbourg roadstead was built between 1783 and 1853 under Louis XVI then Napoleon III to shelter the French fleet. Its outer breakwater stretches over 3.6 km, the longest in the world.
