Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the east along the Esterel coast. The bottom shelves late, so anchor close to the shore or well out in about 10 to 15 m with plenty of chain. Holding is good on the sand and mud patches, the cleaner sand lying towards the La Rague entrance and off the large pink and white houses, while boats over the weed drag with beards of grass on the anchor. Sheltered from NW, N, W, SW and S by the red headlands, with katabatic gusts in a westerly yet a good hold in a mistral, exposed only to the east. It rolls by day from the wash of boats to Cannes and the islands, and calms at night. Watch for fishing nets near the harbour and beach. Water tap marked on the beach.

Practical

Théoule-sur-Mer harbour lies 0.2 nm to the south and Port de la Rague 0.3 nm to the north for overnight shelter and services. The dinghy can be left in Théoule harbour on asking the capitainerie, which usually agrees, though only at set times of day given the boat traffic, and tenders left without asking have been fined. A small Casino supermarket is close by. Train station Théoule-sur-Mer on the Cannes to Saint-Raphael line 300 m inland.

Ashore

The Sentier du littoral crosses behind the cove and leads south to the Pointe de l'Aiguille nature reserve in 1 km, a 12 ha headland of red volcanic rock classified since 1988. Chez Philippe on the beach beside the port is well regarded, and village shops and a bakery are on avenue de Lerins 250 m from the beach. Passing under the tunnel by the harbour quays gives access to walks in the Esterel massif.

History

Théoule-sur-Mer became an independent commune in 1929, detached from Mandelieu. The Château de La Napoule, 2 km north, was rebuilt from a 14th century Saracen tower by American sculptor Henry Clews between 1918 and 1937.
