Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the south or east, clear of dangers once past the Pointe du Kador. Entrance between two jetties with red and green lights; keep to the green pole and stay in the marked channel, which silts and gives reduced water on big tidal coefficients, with as little as about 1.4 m reported at the entrance near low water springs. Maximum draught 1.9 m at the visitor pontoon, over 2 m alongside at low tide on the V pontoon. VHF channel 9 for the harbour office. Shelter is good from west through north, but the bay is open to south and southeast winds and can be rolly with swell.

Practical

Harbour office open year-round but staffed limited hours, roughly 9 to 12; staff come to the visitor pontoon to help moor, take payment and give the gate and sanitary codes. Water and electricity on all pontoons, the electricity on a 12 hour timer worked by a push button. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol. Sanitary blocks renovated in 2024, showers, laundry and waste pump-out, though visitor toilets are few and there is no WiFi. Prices run high, around 30 euros for an 8.5 m boat. Bakery close by, Super U and a Comptoir de la Mer chandlery 5 to 12 minutes on foot.

Ashore

Footpath GR 34 runs from the harbour along the cliffs to the Pointe de Dinan, about 4 km west, and south towards the Cap de la Chevre. Grotte de l'Autel and the sea caves can be reached by tender or by a kayak hired from the water sports centre by the harbour. Village centre with restaurants and a seasonal market 200 m from the pontoons.

History

Morgat grew from a sardine fishing village in the 19th century, then became a seaside resort developed by the Peugeot family from 1883 onwards with the Grand Hotel de la Mer. The harbour was rebuilt after the Second World War.
