River anchorage on the Morlaix estuary in northern Finistère, off the village of Locquénolé, on a mud over sand bottom that dries at low water.

Approach and anchoring

The estuary is navigable from the sea on a rising tide from half tide onwards. Shelter from NE, E, SE, S, SW and W, well protected from most directions. The anchorage dries at low water onto flat mud over sand, so it suits boats that can take the ground; the silt is of uneven density and a keel boat may heel awkwardly as it settles. There is no landing once the tide is out. Tidal streams run strongly on both flood and ebb, so moor with enough scope for the swing.

Practical

Forain anchorage with no pontoon. Refuge at Morlaix marina 2.6 NM south at the head of the estuary, a lock-gated basin reached on the high water gate. Port Diben on the coast 5.2 NM north offers a fair-weather alternative.

Ashore

Locquénolé is a small commune on the west bank of the Morlaix river. A coastal footpath follows the estuary south to Morlaix and north to Carantec, passing oyster beds and the wooded shoreline of the Bay of Morlaix Natura 2000 site.

History

Locquénolé takes its name from Saint Guénolé, founder of the abbey of Landévennec in the 5th century. The church in the village dates from the Romanesque period and was listed as a historic monument in 1916.
