Guide
Approach and anchoring
Straightforward approach from the south, entrance between two jetties with red and green lights. Max draught 3 m. Watch for the mistral and tramontane funnelling from the NW across the gulf. Berths run between Ducs d'Albe posts and can be tight, so take fenders in on the approach or they jam against the posts. Assistance with mooring is not always on hand. VHF 9. Fuel berth at the marina entrance, diesel and petrol.
Practical
1547 berths behind locked pontoon gates, harbour office open year round. Water and electricity at the pontoons. Showers and toilets in the sanitary blocks. Chandlery and repair services on site. Fish shop, butcher and bakery by Pier R, with a Lidl and a Super U within walking distance and all shops in the resort centre at 300 m. The western part of the marina is under construction, and berths there are a long walk from the office.
Ashore
Sandy beach directly east of the harbour, 200 m on foot. Architectural walking tour of the Balladur pyramids, labelled 20th century heritage by the French Ministry of Culture in 2010. Cycle path along the coast to Le Grau-du-Roi, 6 km west. The resort makes a base for visiting Aigues-Mortes, Nîmes and the Pont du Gard inland.
History
La Grande Motte was built from 1965 as part of the Racine plan to develop the Languedoc coast. Architect Jean Balladur designed the resort around pyramid forms inspired by Teotihuacan. The marina opened in 1969.
