Guide
Approach and anchoring
Navily lists shelter from NW and W only, so the anchorage is open to the trade wind sectors and to swell from the north. Set the anchor in sand, away from rock and weed. Îlet Tête à l'Anglais, about 2 km north-east, is closed to landing all year.
Practical
No services. The land part of the islet is in the cœur of the Parc national de la Guadeloupe and its central section is a Conservatoire du littoral site. Deshaies harbour is 3.8 nm south.
Story
The name comes from the loggerhead turtle, caouanne in French and kawan in Creole, which nested here. Seen from the shore the islet looks like a turtle.
