Historic harbour of 724 berths at the foot of the Suquet hill in Cannes, opposite the Palais des Festivals and facing the Îles de Lérins.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Baie de Cannes, keeping clear of the Îles de Lérins to the south. Entrance between the Jetée Albert Édouard and the mole of the Pantiero, with harbour lights. Maximum draught 5 metres. Call on VHF 12 before entry, and the assigned berth is passed by radio on arrival. Berthing assistance is given on request rather than automatically, so ask when booking, and smaller boats are not always helped. The berths lie open to the wash of passing ferries and yachts and can be choppy. Anchoring prohibited in the bay between the port and the islands during the Cannes Film Festival in May.
Practical
724 berths, operated by IGY Marinas, including berths for yachts over 40 metres along the Jetée Albert Édouard. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol. Water and electricity at each berth. Sanitary blocks with showers, a card-operated launderette and still and sparkling drinking water. Berthing is moderate for the coast, around 48 to 56 euros a night for a boat of about 12 metres. The marina closes to visitors for roughly three weeks each September for the Cannes boat show. All shops and services on La Croisette and in the rue Meynadier within 200 metres.
Ashore
Marché Forville, the covered food market of Cannes, is 150 metres from the harbour and open every morning except Monday. Le Suquet old quarter rises directly above the port with the Musée de la Castre in the 11th-century tower. Ferries to the Île Sainte-Marguerite leave from the Pantiero quay, 15 minute crossing.
History
Cannes was a fishing village dependent on the monks of Lérins until the 19th century. It became a winter resort after Lord Brougham's forced stay in 1834, which led to the building of the first villas along the seafront. The Festival de Cannes has been held in the town since 1946.
Story
The Pointe de la Croisette was named in the 17th century after a small cross erected by the monks of Lérins to mark the landing point for pilgrims.
