Approach and anchoring

Approach from the Golfe de la Napoule between Île Sainte-Marguerite and Île Saint-Honorat. The bottom is largely posidonia with sand patches, so drop on clear sand for holding and to spare the protected meadow; holding is fair as the grass is short. A mussel farm marked by a north cardinal lies off the north of the anchorage, with an old anchor chain on the bottom to its south-west that has fouled anchors. Approaching from the west past the Gaou islands, watch a 2.5 m shoal just past the north cardinal. Sheltered from SW through S to SE; exposed to the mistral from N and to easterly swell.

Practical

No services on site. Land the tender at the island harbour where the tourist boats come in, with room to leave it for a couple of hours, 0.6 nm W; Port des Moines is 0.9 nm S. Cannes marinas are within 3 nm on the mainland for fuel and provisions. Some anchored party boats and the shore restaurant La Guérite can run loud music late into the night, so choose a spot by the wind.

Ashore

Île Sainte-Marguerite is a Natura 2000 site covered by umbrella pine and eucalyptus forest. Fort Royal, on the island's north shore, held the Man in the Iron Mask from 1687 to 1698 and now houses the Musée de la Mer. A signposted coastal path loops the island in about 2 hours from the débarcadère.
