River port at the confluence of the Seine and the Loing, 75 km south-east of Paris, in Seine-et-Marne.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
On the left bank of the Seine just upstream of écluse de Saint-Mammès, which gives access to the Canal du Loing and beyond to the Canal de Briare and the Loire. Commercial barge traffic is heavy at the confluence, so keep to starboard and listen to VHF 10 on the Seine. The berths take a heavy wash from passing barges.
Practical
Twenty berths along the quay, water and electricity on the pontoon, toilets and showers on site, fuel on the opposite bank. Capitainerie, bakery, small supermarket and SNCF station on the Paris Lyon line within 400 m. Laundrette at the Yachting Club de Fontainebleau 3.3 NM upstream.
Ashore
A market sets up in front of the halt on Sunday mornings. Musée de la Marine de Loire documents the town's barge-building past, open weekends. Moret-sur-Loing at 0.8 NM south-east, a fortified medieval town painted by Alfred Sisley between 1889 and 1899, reached on foot along the towpath in 40 minutes. Forêt de Fontainebleau trailheads at Thomery, 3 km.
History
Saint-Mammès grew as a mariniers' village in the 19th century when it marshalled the barges loaded with Burgundy wine and Nivernais coal headed for Paris. The local saying went that one in two households owned a péniche.
