Ashore
Fort Gustav, Fort Karl and Fort Oscar, built in the 18th century, overlook the harbour, and Fort Oscar now houses the gendarmerie. The Anglican church of St Bartholomew dates from 1855. Shell Beach lies 0.3 NM south of the harbour quays.
History
First called Le Carénage, the town was renamed after King Gustav III when France handed the island to Sweden in 1784 in exchange for trading rights in Gothenburg. Sweden sold Saint-Barthélemy back to France in 1878, and the town still carries the mark of the Swedish period.
