Anchorage off Le Fret on the east side of the Crozon peninsula, in the Rade de Brest, Finistère. Sand, rock and mud bottom.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Rade de Brest, clear of the Roscanvel shoals to the north. Anchor outside the harbour moorings in about 8 metres, on mud and sand between patches of rock; holding is good in the thick mud, which comes up with slimy weed on the chain. Sheltered from NW through S to SE, open only to a due-east wind and the north-east fetch across the Rade. Wash from the Brest shuttle and military ferries rolls boats by day but eases once they stop for the evening. VHF 9 for the Camaret harbours.
Practical
Forain anchorage with no marina services on site. Le Fret has a small quay used by the Brest to Le Fret passenger shuttle and two or three places for a drink or a bite, one small restaurant reported open only Friday to Sunday in May. The village grocery has burned down, so bring provisions; a bus service runs and the quay water point has been reported unreliable. Camaret-sur-Mer, 3.6 nm west, has fuel, water and repairs.
Ashore
GR34 coastal path runs along the shore and links Le Fret to the Pointe des Espagnols in about 6 km north. The slips and foreshore carry sharp oysters, awkward underfoot when landing at low water. Small beach of Trez-Rouz 2 km west by road. Memorial Museum of the Atlantic Battle at the Pointe des Espagnols 7 km by road.
