Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter Christiansted harbour from the north between Fort Louise Augusta and Round Reef, or by the deeper route round the west side of Round Reef. Cruising guides advise against a night entry, as some buoys are unlit. The main anchorage lies behind Protestant Cay in about 10 feet, 3 metres, on sand with good holding, sheltered from the swell by the reef. Keep clear of the seaplane landing area.
Practical
Christiansted harbour is a designated mooring and anchoring area. Free public moorings for boats under 60 feet are for day use only. DPNR requires an anchoring permit for recreational vessels that hold no mooring permit. Navily lists water and a dinghy pontoon. Lock the dinghy: three were stolen from this anchorage in a single night in December 2023.
History
The Danes built Fort Christiansvaern between 1738 and 1749, largely of yellow bricks brought from Denmark as ships' ballast. It guarded shipping against pirates and privateers, enforced customs duties and housed the garrison, and is now the centrepiece of Christiansted National Historic Site.
