Commercial quay at the head of the Bonifacio fjord in southern Corsica, used by the Bonifacio to Sardinia ferries and by large yachts up to 4 m draught.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter the fjord from the south between the cliffs. The entrance is about 100 m wide and sheltered from all directions once inside. VHF 15 for the commercial quay, VHF 9 for the main marina. Strong katabatic gusts funnel through the channel in mistral conditions, and an east wind sets across the quay and makes coming alongside awkward. Berth stern-to with the team's help, though the VHF is often not answered, particularly in strong wind.
Practical
Roughly 30 berths reserved for large units. Fuel available on the quay. Fresh water on the quay is turned on only about two hours a day, one hour morning and evening. Berthing is expensive, around 500 euros a night for a 20 metre boat in June and about 86 to 100 euros for a 15 metre boat in the low season. Pay at the wooden hut by the ferry barrier, roughly 15:00 to 18:00. Main marina services and shops at the head of the fjord a short walk away. Ferry terminal for Santa Teresa di Gallura on the same quay.
Ashore
Climb the Montee Rastello or the King of Aragon staircase of 187 steps cut into the cliff, a little tourist train also runs up to the citadel. The old citadel of the Haute Ville sits 60 m above the water. Cemetery of the Marins at the tip of the peninsula with its whitewashed tombs. The B52 bar on the quay is a fixture and runs late, noisy for the boats moored alongside.
History
The citadel was founded in 828 by Bonifacio II of Tuscany. The town was a Genoese stronghold from the twelfth to the eighteenth century and its fortifications remain largely intact.
