Natural fjord harbour at the southern tip of Corsica, cut 1.5 km into limestone cliffs opposite the Strait of Bonifacio.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south between Capo Pertusato and the Îles Lavezzi, across the Strait of Bonifacio. Entrance invisible until 0.5 NM off due to the cliff backdrop. Inner fjord narrows to 100 m at the goulet. Strong gusts down the cliffs in west and east wind. Call VHF 9 early, as the response is often slow and in peak season boats have waited more than an hour off the ferry quay before a berth was shown. Berthing is stern-to on lazy lines, marineros handing a bow line; multihulls lie alongside the end of a pontoon.
Practical
Booking is effectively required in season, as boats without a reservation are turned away; reserve online at bonifacio-marina.corsica or through the Les Ports Corses app, with a deposit once the port confirms. 350 berths along the inner quays, max draught 6 m at the outer quays. Diesel at the fuel berth on the north side. Water, electricity and showers, though the sanitary blocks are basic and showers are paid. Chandlers, restaurants and a supermarket within 200 m on the quai Comparetti. A quayside nightclub keeps the harbour noisy until about 2 a.m. Prices are high, from around 74 euros for a 12 m boat upward.
Ashore
Haute Ville perched on the cliff, reached by the Montee Rastello or the Porte de Genes, 80 m of climb. Escalier du Roi d'Aragon, 187 steps cut into the cliff down to the sea. Îles Lavezzi nature reserve 6 NM east, granite islets with marked snorkelling zones. Beaches of Piantarella and Sperone to the east by road.
History
Founded in 828 by the Tuscan count Bonifacio, the town was held by Genoa from 1195 to 1768. The citadel resisted a siege by Alfonso V of Aragon in 1420, origin of the cliff-cut Aragon staircase. Corsica was sold to France by Genoa in 1768.
