Anchorage on the south-west side of Penfret, easternmost island of the Glénan archipelago off south Finistère.

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the south, keeping clear of the rocks that extend off the island and of the cardinal marks around the archipelago. The lighthouse of Penfret serves as a leading landmark. Bottom is sand mixed with eelgrass, so drag the anchor to find a clear sand patch. Holding on the clean sand is firm, with about 3 metres at low water on a medium tidal coefficient. Allow room to swing, as the wind can turn to lie against the current.

Practical

No services on site. Drop anchor only, no moorings. The nearest shelter is Port de Trévignon on the mainland, around 6.4 nm to the north-east. The main Glénan anchorage lies about 1.8 nm west inside the archipelago lagoon.

Ashore

Penfret hosts the summer base of the Centres Nautiques des Glénan sailing school. The island is otherwise uninhabited and access to parts of it is restricted during the bird nesting season.

History

The Glénan islands have been used since the 1960s as the main open-sea training ground of the Glénans sailing school, founded in 1947, one of the largest non-profit sailing schools in Europe.
