Approach and anchoring

Approach from the north via the Chenal des Bluiniers or from the west by La Pie cardinal. Coming from the south, watch for fishing buoys flagged black or red. Tidal streams run strongly between the islands. Drop the hook in La Chambre between Île Saint-Nicolas and Île de Bananec on sand and mud in 3 to 5 metres at low water springs. Shelter from NW, NE, W and SW, exposed to southerly weather; in a fresh south-westerly the holding stays sound but a heavy swell can work in overnight.

Practical

No fuel, no water, no shore power. Visitor moorings managed seasonally by the Glénan sailing school. Small quay on Saint-Nicolas for dinghy landing.

Ashore

Saint-Nicolas island has a seasonal restaurant, a small chapel and walking paths. The archipelago is a Natura 2000 site protecting the Glénan narcissus, endemic to Saint-Nicolas and flowering in April and May.

History

The Centre Nautique des Glénans sailing school was founded on the archipelago in 1947 by former Resistance members and became one of the largest sailing schools in Europe.
