Freshwater stopover on the canalised Moselle at Charmes, in the Vosges department of Grand Est.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Freycinet gabarit waterway, 38.5 m locks operated by VNF remote control with a télécommande collected at the nearest lock. No tide, no current to speak of outside flood periods. Two concrete quays, one either side of the bridge. Depth is greater on the north quay at over 2 m, while the south quay carries only about 1.6 m.
Practical
Quay with mooring bollards, water and electricity, the latter not always live at every point. Showers and toilets are kept locked and need an access code, which the tourist office will give when the port office does not answer. Small craft and hire boats only, commercial traffic has largely gone. Boulangerie and a small grocery close by, the Leclerc supermarket about 2 km away. Motorhomes line much of the quay. Railway station on the Nancy to Epinal line.
History
Charmes sits on the canalised Moselle, upstream section of the through-route from the Meuse to the Saône via the Canal des Vosges. The town was almost entirely rebuilt after the First World War, when it stood on the front line during the battle of the Mortagne in August 1914.
