Guide
Approach and anchoring
Open-roadstead approach from the west. The bottom is weed and flat rock, holding poor and unreliable, with anchors slipping or fouling on boulders, so it is best treated as a fair-weather daytime stop and few trust it overnight. Set the anchor by diving on it in 7 to 14 m, more in places. Katabatic gusts accelerate down the cliff. Anchoring is banned close under the Genoese tower, where a pair of ospreys nest in a quiet zone marked on the charts and enforced with fines, so lie well clear on the far side of the cove. Protected from SE to SW swell, exposed to the N and W.
Practical
No services on site. Closest shelter is Porto-Ota 6.3 NM east, then Cargese 6.7 NM south.
Ashore
Capu Rossu peninsula carries the Tour de Turghiu, a Genoese watchtower of 1608 at 331 m, reached by a waymarked footpath of about two hours return from the Piana road. The main draw is a dinghy or paddle tour of the Sbiro caves and rock arches around the cape, with clear water for snorkelling; tour boats and shuttles work them heavily through the day and it quietens at night. Ospreys are often seen overhead.
History
The Tour de Turghiu is one of the Genoese coastal towers built along Corsica between the 16th and 17th centuries to watch for Barbary raids.
