Approach and anchoring

Anchoring over the posidonia meadow is now signposted as prohibited, so treat this as a fair-weather day stop only. The calanque is deep, 10 to 20 metres, with only a small shallow sand patch to hold in; a metal pipe runs across that patch on the bottom and can trap an anchor, so use a tripping line. Keep clear of the marked channel used by the tourist shuttles and of the swim zone off the shore.

Practical

A day stop only, best in settled weather. Fair shelter from SW, S and SE, but exposed to strong easterly or northerly winds. Port Vieux lies 0.8 NM NW and Nouveau Port 0.9 NM N, both with all services if the wind shifts.

Ashore

Land at the quay to walk the wooded Île Verte, quiet outside the middle of the day, with viewpoints over the Bec de l'Aigle. A bar-restaurant by the quay closes around 7pm. La Ciotat old harbour, its market and shipyard heritage museum are a short hop across by dinghy.
