Approach and anchoring
Reached by the tidal Garonne from the Gironde estuary, about 50 nautical miles upriver, with strong flood and ebb streams. The quay lies on the right bank between the Cite du Vin and Cap Sciences. From half tide to high water a back eddy allows an approach from downstream, but the ebb runs hard off the pontoon, so time the arrival on the rising tide. Permission to use the lock of the Bassins a flot must be requested beforehand from contactplaisance@bordeaux-port.fr; it works around high water.
Practical
Short-term use only while waiting for the lock, with no one on hand to take lines. A better-sheltered berth is the Cite du Vin pontoon nearby, run by Bordeaux Metropole, secured by code with water and electricity; it runs about 30 euros a night against 44.70 at the Bassins a flot and books on 07 85 87 42 24, with a Lidl a few minutes away by bike. The Halte nautique de Bordeaux further upriver suits a longer stay.
