Approach and anchoring
Drop the hook in the lee of Sainte-Marguerite, in about 5 metres within a few dozen metres of the shore, staying well clear of the Basse du Vengeur shoal that gives the spot its name. The bottom is rock and largely posidonia, so holding is poor and the anchor needs care to set. Shelter from W through SW to S, best in calm weather or a southerly. Exposed to northerlies and the easterly swell. Best by day, as the shoal is not lit.
Practical
No services at the anchorage. Port des Moines lies 1 nm SW and the Sainte-Marguerite jetty 1.2 nm W, both with seasonal tender landings.
Ashore
Sainte-Marguerite island trails circle the forested interior past the Fort Royal, where Louis XIV held the Man in the Iron Mask from 1687 to 1698. The fort now houses the Musée de la Mer, displaying amphorae from the Roman wreck of the Tradelière.
