Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the N through the Rade de Brest, then S into the Anse du Tinduff. Mud bottom with good holding once set. Shallow at low water of spring tides, the inner part dries, and the ground shoals again at the east beacon when coming from the south. VHF 9.
Practical
About 212 moorings managed by the local authority, water available ashore, with four white visitor buoys in the eastern part of the harbour; reserve through the Plougastel-Daoulas town hall and drop 10 euros a night in the honesty box ashore. Boats also anchor SE of the breakwater or south of the buoys in good holding. Protection from NW, W and SW winds by the Plougastel peninsula. Nearest refuges: Rostiviec 1.6 NM NE and Moulin Mer 3.4 NM SE.
Ashore
The Café du Port on the slipway has a local feel and a decent range of ales, and is about the only place ashore. When landing at the main quay slip, keep to the north side, as the walls are covered in sharp oyster shells that can cut an inflatable. Tinduff oyster hatchery produces spat for the Brittany oyster farms and can be seen from the quay. Sentier côtier follows the Rade de Brest towards the Pointe de l'Armorique. Plougastel-Daoulas town 4 km by road, known for its strawberries and calvary carved 1602 to 1604.
History
The Rade de Brest has been France's principal Atlantic naval base since Richelieu ordered the arsenal built in 1631, and the Tinduff area sheltered fishing and oyster boats of the Plougastel peninsula.
