Anchorage off White Horse Key, a mangrove and sand island in the Ten Thousand Islands of south-west Florida.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
White Horse Key lies in the chain of islands between Cape Romano and the mouth of the Lostmans River. Anchor off the western shore over sand and mud. Walker's Coon Key Marina and Safe Harbor Calusa Island both lie about 5 miles to the north-west.
Practical
No facilities at the key. Sand and mud bottom with good holding. The anchorage is sheltered from north-west through south-west; exposed from the east. The island carries a sand beach about 1.1 miles long with a south-western exposure to the Gulf of Mexico.
Ashore
The beach is reached by tender and is known among local boaters for shelling. White Horse Key sits within the Ten Thousand Islands area, a chain of mangrove islets backed by national wildlife refuge land.
