Private yacht club within the Vermilion Lagoons, on the Vermilion River near its mouth on Lake Erie, Ohio.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

The club lies inside the Vermilion Lagoons, reached from Lake Erie through the Vermilion River entrance. Approach depth is around 15 feet and dockside depth around 7 feet. Vermilion Municipal Docks are 0.1 nautical mile to the south-west.

Practical

Fixed docks with 50 berths, of which 15 are transient, taking vessels up to 80 feet. The club has roughly 70 member families. Downtown Vermilion's restaurants and shops are within walking distance, and the Lagoons' private beach is a short stroll away.

Ashore

The Inland Seas Maritime Museum stands by the river, set in a 1909 house once known as Harbor View. A 16-foot replica of the 1877 lighthouse was dedicated nearby in 1992.

History

Vermilion was incorporated as a village in 1837 and grew as a Great Lakes shipbuilding port. So many ships' captains made it their home port that it became known as the Village of Lake Captains. An iron lighthouse marked the river entrance from 1877 until 1929.
