Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter from Lake Michigan through the Black River mouth between two parallel piers, the gap about 50 metres wide, marked by the red South Pierhead Light dating from 1903. A shoreward range tower assists alignment into the harbour. The marina lies upriver from the entrance.
Practical
Part of the 229-berth municipal marina spread across four basins, for boats from 20 to 60 feet. Berths have 30 amp shore power, with 50 amp at some, plus water, heads and showers. Season runs from mid-April to mid-October. Reservations through the Michigan DNR system.
Ashore
South Haven town centre, with shops and restaurants, lines the river within walking distance. The Lake Michigan public beaches lie either side of the harbour entrance.
History
The South Pierhead Light has guided boats into the Black River since 1903. Its catwalk to shore is one of only four lighthouse catwalks still standing in Michigan.
