Guide
Approach and anchoring
Access by canal only, no tidal constraint. Maximum draught 2 metres. The lock on either side of the basin operates to VNF hours, generally 9h to 12h and 13h30 to 18h30 in season. Mooring alongside the quay facing the Château des Rohan. Boats over 25 metres should contact VNF in advance.
Practical
Thirty berths alongside with water and shore power on the quay. Harbourmaster on site in season. Shops, bakery and supermarket within 400 metres in the town centre. Railway station 300 metres from the quay, direct trains to Strasbourg in 35 minutes.
Ashore
Château des Rohan on the opposite quay, built 1779 to 1790 by Nicolas Salins de Montfort for the Cardinal de Rohan, now houses the Musée du Château and a youth hostel. Jardin botanique du col de Saverne 3 km uphill. Rocher Saint-Michel and the ruins of the Haut-Barr castle 5 km south by marked footpath.
History
Saverne was the Roman posting station of Tres Tabernae on the road from Strasbourg to Metz. The canal reached the town in 1853 and the basin facing the château was dug as a turning and mooring area for commercial barges until the 1970s.
