Approach and anchoring
Approach along the canal from the east via the 475 m Niderviller tunnel, or from the west via the 2 306 m Arzviller tunnel and the Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane. Freycinet gauge, maximum draught 1.80 m, maximum air draught 3.50 m. Canal traffic follows VNF rules.
Practical
Hire base with alongside berths on pontoons, water, electricity, pump-out and a fuel point for hire fleets. Reception and chandlery on site. Boulangerie and grocery in Niderviller village 300 m from the base.
Ashore
The Niderviller faience works, founded 1735, is a short walk in the village. The Saint-Louis-Arzviller inclined plane is 3 km west along the towpath and lifts 900 tonne barges 44.55 m in a single operation. Cycle paths along the canal towpath lead to Sarrebourg 8 km east.
History
The Canal de la Marne au Rhin opened in 1853 to link the Marne at Vitry-le-Francois with the Rhine at Strasbourg. The original flight of 17 locks at Arzviller was replaced in 1969 by the inclined plane, the only one of its type in France.
