Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the north across the gulf, clear of hazards once past Punta Vecchiaia. Entrance marked by red and green jetty lights. Shelter is good from all quadrants except strong Libeccio from the west, which sends swell into the bay. Maximum draught 4 m. Call the capitainerie on VHF 9.
Practical
1015 berths with water and electricity on pontoons, fuel berth for diesel and petrol. Showers and toilets at the capitainerie. All shops, banks and a supermarket within 300 m in the old town. Market on the square on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
Ashore
Citadel of Saint-Florent above the port, built by the Genoese from 1440. Plage de la Roya, a 1.6 km sand beach, starts 600 m south of the marina. The Agriates desert coast and the Plage du Loto are reached by shuttle boat from the quay, crossing in about 20 minutes.
History
Saint-Florent was a Genoese stronghold and briefly capital of the short-lived Anglo-Corsican Kingdom from 1794 to 1796 under Viceroy Sir Gilbert Elliot. The circular citadel on the point dates from the mid-15th century.
Story
The gulf is the southern edge of the Patrimonio AOC, one of the oldest wine appellations in Corsica, recognised in 1968.
