Approach and anchoring

Reached from the Saône navigable channel, downstream of the Pont Bonaparte and upstream of the confluence with the Rhône. Current moderate, stronger in winter and spring floods. Moor alongside the stone quay, bow or stern into the stream. Watch for commercial river cruise traffic which calls regularly in central Lyon.

Practical

Alongside mooring on the stone quay. No dedicated pontoon services for pleasure craft on this stretch. Shops, markets and restaurants of Vieux Lyon within 50 m. Metro station Vieux Lyon on line D gives direct access to the Presqu'île and Part-Dieu.

Ashore

Vieux Lyon, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1998, sits directly behind the quay with its traboules and Renaissance courtyards. Cathédrale Saint-Jean is 150 m away. Funicular to Fourvière basilica departs from Vieux Lyon station. Musée des Confluences at the tip of the Presqu'île is 2 km downstream.

History

The quai de Bondy was laid out in the 19th century along the Renaissance riverfront of Vieux Lyon, one of the largest preserved Renaissance quarters in Europe. The quarter grew on the silk trade and on the Italian banking families established in Lyon from the 15th century.

Story

The traboules of Vieux Lyon, covered passageways cutting through buildings from street to street, were used by silk workers known as canuts to carry bolts of cloth under cover.
