Honour quay of Sète's commercial port, on the western side of the Môle Saint-Louis basin, in Occitanie. Not a plaisance berth, but the occasional visitor pontoon for tall ships and events.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter Sète through the main commercial pass between the Môle Saint-Louis and the Quai du Maroc. Keep clear of cargo and ferry movements; port control on VHF 12. The quay fronts the old commercial basin and accepts ships up to 200 m with 7.4 m alongside, so plaisance moorings are granted only by prior arrangement with the capitainerie.
Practical
No dedicated pontoons, water, or electricity for yachts. The nearest plaisance berths are at IGY Sète Marina 300 m NE and at the town canals of Sète 300 m S, both with full services. Town shops, market and station are within a ten minute walk.
Ashore
Les Halles covered market at 400 m on rue Gambetta, open daily except Monday afternoons. Musée Paul Valéry and Cimetière Marin up on the Mont Saint-Clair, 1.5 km S. Théâtre de la Mer, former Fort Saint-Pierre, 1.2 km S on the seafront.
History
Sète was founded as a commercial port by Colbert in 1666 to serve as the Mediterranean outlet of the Canal du Midi. The Quai d'Alger took its name from the North African trade and was the main cargo handling front until the Orsetti basin was opened east of the pass after 1945.
