Port of Chinook
- Type
- Harbour
Small commercial and recreational harbour on Baker Bay, north shore of the lower Columbia River, about 10 miles from the river mouth in Washington state.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter Baker Bay from the main Columbia River channel, well inside Cape Disappointment and the bar. The bar at the river mouth requires planning around slack water and is closed in heavy weather. Watch for shoaling and crab pots on the approach. Ilwaco lies 4.4 NM to the NW for shelter.
Practical
Around 300 berths with roughly 10 reserved for transients, fuel berth, pump-out and a launch ramp. The fleet is dominated by commercial fishing boats targeting salmon, crab and black cod, so visitor space is limited in season.
History
The port district was formally established by Pacific County in 1951. The wider Baker Bay area was the site of Fort Columbia and Lewis and Clark made landfall on this north shore in November 1805.
