Approach and anchoring

Accessed from the canal, which joins the Canal latéral à la Loire at Digoin after about 56 km and ten locks. No tidal constraint. Port basin is a bassin à flot fed by the canal, entered via a short branch from the main line.

Practical

Around 100 berths. Water and electricity on pontoons, sanitary block with showers, waste pump-out. Year-round berthing and winter storage ashore are available. Roanne town centre with all shops and SNCF station is within 500 m.

Ashore

Musée Joseph Déchelette with Gallo-Roman collections at 600 m. Riverside walk along the Loire at 1 km. Côte Roannaise AOC vineyards begin 8 km west on the hills above the town.

History

The Canal de Roanne à Digoin opened in 1838 to carry coal from the Loire basin to the Loire river and onwards to Paris via the canal network. Commercial traffic ceased in 1992 and the canal is now used only by pleasure craft.
