Guide

Approach and anchoring

Access on the impounded Loire upstream of the Villerest dam. No current under normal operation. Water level varies with EDF reservoir management, check before arriving.

Practical

Small pleasure harbour used by local boats and a rental base. No marina services listed. Village of Saint-Jean-Saint-Maurice uphill from the port.

Ashore

Gorges de la Loire nature area around the reservoir, waymarked trails along the banks. Medieval village of Saint-Jean-Saint-Maurice classé site, with 12th century keep and views over the gorge. Town of Roanne at 9 km by road for full provisioning and restaurants including Maison Troisgros at Ouches nearby.

History

The Villerest dam, commissioned in 1984, raised the Loire over 35 km upstream to regulate floods at Roanne and downstream Nevers. It flooded several riverside hamlets and created the lake used today for boating.
