Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the buoyed Loire channel, crossing only with knowledge of the inbound and outbound shipping to the port of Saint-Nazaire-Montoir. Protection from SW through S to SE, exposed to the N and NW and to the swell coming up the estuary on the flood. Tidal streams reach 2 to 3 knots in the main channel. Listen VHF 12 for Loire traffic.

Practical

Sand bottom. No dedicated mooring, anchorage only outside the shipping channel. Bassin de Saint-Nazaire 1.5 nm W and Paimboeuf 5.7 nm E for secure berthing and services.

Ashore

Le Serpent d'Océan sculpture by Huang Yong Ping, 130 m long, lies at the foot of the point on the beach. Coastal path south towards Saint-Brevin. The transporter-bridge-replacement Pont de Saint-Nazaire crosses the estuary 1 km upstream, 3356 m long, opened in 1975.

History

A small blockhouse on the point and the disused Mindin fort, built in 1861 on the orders of Napoleon III, guarded the southern approach to the Loire estuary and the naval yards of Saint-Nazaire.
