Family-owned full-service marina on the west bank of the Connecticut River at Portland, roughly 20 nautical miles north of Long Island Sound.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reach the marina from Long Island Sound by entering the Connecticut River at Saybrook Point and running upstream past Essex, Hadlyme and East Haddam. The river is tidal up to Hartford, so allow for a fair tide when working upstream. Channel well marked but watch for shoaling east of Portland.
Practical
35 transient and seasonal berths for boats up to roughly 35 feet, shore power on the pontoons. Indoor and outdoor winter storage, a chandlery and certified service technicians on site. New and brokerage sales for Sabre, Back Cove and Regal.
Ashore
Riverfront Park in Middletown is a short hop across the river by tender or road. Connecticut River Museum at Essex is about 17 nautical miles downstream and worth a side trip by car or boat.
History
Petzold's was founded in 1945 and has been run by four generations of the same family from the same site on Indian Hill Avenue.
