Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter between the breakwaters from Lake Ontario. A flashing green light marks the north jetty and a flashing yellow light its eastern end, with entry possible from either side. Inside, a wide turning basin and commercial channel break off to the west. Anchor on the east side of the river near Fort Ontario, clear of the commercial channel.
Practical
Fuel, fresh water and seasonal berths are available at Oswego Marina, 0.6 nautical miles to the SW. The harbour is a long-used spot for stepping and unstepping masts before the Oswego Canal, which links Lake Ontario to the Erie Canal and the Hudson through seven locks.
History
Fort Ontario stands on the bluff above the river mouth. Five successive forts held this strategic point between 1756 and 1814, attacked seven times during that period. From 1944 to 1946 the fort sheltered 982 Jewish refugees, the only such shelter set up by the United States during the war.
