Large freshwater marina at Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, on Lake Michigan between Chicago and Milwaukee, just south of the Wisconsin state line.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Built in 1989, the harbour has a marked entrance off the open lake. Approach from the east; the channel and breakwaters are well charted. There is no tide on the Great Lakes, but lake levels and onshore swell build with east winds. The marina office handles berthing.

Practical

Around 1,500 floating berths take boats from 30 to 60 feet. A single slip price covers shore power, fresh water, Wi-Fi, pump-out, dock lockers, showers and 24-hour security. Fuel berth, boatyard and chandlery on site. Public beach and fishing pier within the grounds.

Ashore

The marina sits inside North Point Marina State Recreation Area, with 4,160 acres of nature reserve and 6.5 miles of shoreline. Bike, kayak and paddleboard hire at the marina. Salmon and trout charter fishing operates from the harbour.
