Approach and anchoring
Reached by the Canal des Houillères de la Sarre from the Canal de la Marne au Rhin at Gondrexange to the south, or from Sarreguemines and the Moselle to the north. Maximum draught 1.8 m at the pontoons. Écluses operated by VNF on demand.
Practical
10 berths with water and shore power. Capitainerie with basic sanitary block. Village of Mittersheim 400 m from the port, bakery, small shop and two restaurants.
Ashore
Étang de Mittersheim, a 670 ha reservoir feeding the canal, adjoins the village with a sandy bathing beach 800 m from the port. Birdwatching hide on the north shore of the étang. Waymarked cycle loop around the lake is 12 km long.
History
The Canal des Houillères de la Sarre was opened in 1866 to carry Saar coal to the Rhône-Rhin network. The Étang de Mittersheim was raised in the 19th century to act as the summit reservoir for the canal.
