History
Middle Bass Island was landed by French explorer Robert La Salle in 1679 and named Isle des Fleures. German settlers from 1856 planted vineyards, and the Golden Eagle Wine Cellars founded in 1866 became one of the largest wineries in the country. The Lonz Winery, born of a 1926 merger, operated until a fatal terrace collapse in 2000, after which the state created Middle Bass Island State Park in 2001.
