Guide
Approach and anchoring
The harbour is sheltered by Wheaton Island and a 450-foot breakwater off its north side. Anchor near Indian Ledge in depths of 6 to 26 feet over a rocky bottom. Holding is uneven, and the inner harbour behind Indian Ledge is taken up by communal moorings for the fishing fleet. Calm in most conditions but exposed to easterly weather.
Practical
Rental moorings can be arranged with Josh Ames on 207 366 3128. Working docks and wharves serving an active lobster fleet line the shore; this is a fishing community, not a yachting harbour, so visitor facilities are minimal.
Story
Matinicus Rock, about 5 nm south of the island, holds a puffin colony, with seals hauled out on the ledges through the summer.
