Approach and anchoring

Enter the Loire estuary through the buoyed deep-water channel used by commercial shipping, keeping clear of the main channel for seagoing ships. Cordemais is reached on the rising tide, with a minimum of 2.2 m in the approach. Strong tidal streams, up to 3.5 knots on the ebb.

Practical

Around 250 berths on pontoons and trots, water and electricity at the pontoon. Slipway and 40 ton travel lift, winter storage ashore, hull work, engine and rigging services. No fuel pump on site. Small grocery and bakery in Cordemais village, 300 m from the quay.

Ashore

The Lavau-sur-Loire observatory tower, a wooden art installation by Tadashi Kawamata, stands 3.7 NM upstream and is reached on foot through the salt marshes. The Cordemais thermal power station and its 220 m chimney dominate the skyline to the west. Nantes is 35 km upstream by road.

History

Cordemais was a Loire river port for sand and stone until the 19th century. The thermal power plant, visible from most of the estuary, was commissioned in 1970 and is one of the last coal-fired plants in France.
