- Type
- Harbour
Working boatyard and marina on the Hillsborough River in the Seminole Heights district of Tampa, Florida.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Set well upriver from Tampa Bay, on solid ground at the upper limit of navigable water. The river position gives shelter from storms and open-water swell. Tampa Convention Center Marina lies 3.9 miles downstream to the south.
Practical
Wet berths, repair facilities and a self-work yard for owners doing their own maintenance. Showers, laundry, a ship's store and a chandlery on site.
History
The yard was established in 1843 on the Hillsborough River and still operates at its original site. It served riverboats, barges, skiffs and sloops. In October 1863 a Union raid burned two Confederate blockade-runners nearby, including the sloop Scottish Chief, whose remains were the subject of an archaeological survey in 2009.
