Anchorage off a spoil island in Hillsborough Bay, in the upper reaches of Tampa Bay, Florida.

Approach and anchoring

Mud bottom, sheltered from north-west through south-west. Sunken Island was built from dredged material in the 1920s when the Alafia River channel was cut. Landing on the island is not allowed.

Practical

No facilities. Inter-Bay Moorings lies 2 miles east and Apollo Beach Marina 3.7 miles south.

Story

The island forms part of the Audubon Alafia Bank Sanctuary, a nesting site for roseate spoonbills, herons, egrets, ibis and brown pelicans. Boats are asked to keep clear of the shoreline during the spring nesting season.
