Approach and anchoring

Reached by the Saône from Chalon-sur-Saône 60 km downstream or from Auxonne 20 km upstream. No tide. Current generally under 1 knot outside floods. Watch the reduced air draught under the Saint-Jean-de-Losne road bridge, standard on this reach of the Saône for canal boats. The town quay lies 0.1 nautical miles east and the main Saint-Jean-de-Losne basin 0.3 nautical miles north at the mouth of the Canal de Bourgogne.

Practical

Alongside mooring in front of the slipway, water and electricity bollards on the quay. Fuel, chandlery and pump-out at the adjacent H2O and Blanquart yards. Capitainerie of the main basin handles overnight fees. Bakeries, supermarket and restaurants within 400 metres in the town centre.

Ashore

Saint-Jean-de-Losne old town, one of the oldest bastides of Burgundy, sits 400 metres north with its 15th-century Saint-Jean-Baptiste church and the Musée de la Batellerie on Rue de la Liberté. Towpath of the Canal de Bourgogne gives a flat cycling or walking route to Dijon 30 km north. Côte de Nuits vineyards around Gevrey-Chambertin lie 25 km north-west.

History

Saint-Jean-de-Losne resisted a siege by 60 000 Imperial troops in 1636 during the Thirty Years War with a garrison of only 150 soldiers, earning Louis XIV's title of Belle Défense. The town became the main inland boating hub of Burgundy in the late 20th century through the H2O and Connoisseur hire fleets.
