Anchorage on the north side of Great Brewster Island, Boston Harbor, Massachusetts, sand bottom, sheltered only from the north.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from Boston Harbor and anchor off the north shore. The sand bottom gives fair holding. Shelter is limited to the N, so the anchorage is exposed in most other winds and best used in settled weather.
Practical
There is no pier and no facilities on the island. Safe Harbor Sunset Bay lies 3 nm to the S and Steamboat Wharf Marina 4.4 nm to the S, both in Hull with fuel and berths. Land by tender on the beach.
Ashore
Great Brewster Island is part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. It is a drumlin rising over 100 ft, with footpaths to the bluffs and a view towards Boston Light on Little Brewster. Visitor facilities are limited to a composting toilet.
Story
Access is discouraged in the seabird nesting season, when gulls defending the bluffs will dive at anyone walking the paths.
