Approach and anchoring

Lock 15 on the canalised Marne between Paris and Epernay, VHF 22. Operated by VNF, hours vary by season, check the Port Plus application. Mud bottom, holding good. Moor upstream or downstream of the lock on the service quay outside chamber operations.

Practical

No on-site fuel. Water tap at the lock keeper cabin when staffed. La Ferte-sous-Jouarre municipal port 5.9 NM W with diesel and electricity. Port du Chemin des 2 Rivieres 6.4 NM W.

Ashore

Village of Charly-sur-Marne at 800 m with bakery, pharmacy and Carrefour Contact. Edge of the Champagne AOC southern zone, vineyards of the Omois cotes visible from the lock. Musee Jean de La Fontaine at Chateau-Thierry 12 km E.

History

The Marne was canalised by stages between 1837 and 1865. The Charly lock was rebuilt to 40 m chamber length after the 1946 gauge upgrade for Freycinet barges.
