Guide

Approach and anchoring

Open to the east, the bay gives shelter from north through south-east and south-west winds. The clay bottom holds well and there is room for dozens of boats to anchor even on a busy weekend. Fourteen mooring buoys and two linear moorage systems sit in the bay, all left in place year-round.

Practical

No fuel and no shore power. Drinking water at Echo Bay is not available, so carry your own or fill up at Fossil Bay. A steep gravel beach at the head of the bay makes a workable tender landing.

Ashore

A network of park trails runs from Echo Bay across the island, with sandstone outcrops worn into honeycomb shapes along the shore. Fossil Bay, with the only drinking water on the island, lies a short walk south across the isthmus.

History

The cluster of islands around Sucia was bought in 1960 by the Puget Sound Interclub Association and given to the State of Washington as a marine park.
