Approach and anchoring
Access from the commercial port via the Trystram lock, operated on request to the lock keeper on VHF 73. Strong currents can be felt outside the lock on spring tides. The approach to Dunkerque is well buoyed and the outer harbour has ample water at all states of tide.
Practical
Pontoon berths with water and shore power. Showers and toilets at the yacht club. Diesel is available at the fuel berth in the adjacent Bassin du Commerce. Town centre shops, market and rail station within 600 metres on foot.
Ashore
Musée Portuaire on the old tobacco warehouse quay at 400 metres, covering the history of the harbour. Three-masted Duchesse Anne moored nearby as a museum ship. FRAC Grand Large contemporary art centre at 1.2 km on the former shipyard site. Beach of Malo-les-Bains at 2 km.
History
Dunkerque was the base of corsair Jean Bart in the late 17th century and the site of Operation Dynamo in May and June 1940, when 338 000 Allied troops were evacuated to England from the beaches and moles of the port.
