Approach and anchoring

Approach from the north between the rocks of the Côte de Granit Rose, keeping watch on the cardinal marks. The channel is strewn with awash rocks and is only practical by day in good visibility. Hold off the island in 3 to 5 metres. Port de Ploumanac'h lies 0.4 nm south behind its tidal sill, accessible around high water.

Practical

No services at the anchorage. Ploumanac'h harbour 0.4 nm south has water, fuel and a capitainerie but dries at low water springs. All shops in Ploumanac'h village.

Ashore

Sentier des Douaniers GR 34 runs along the pink granite chaos between Ploumanac'h and Perros-Guirec, one of the most walked coastal paths in Brittany. Phare de Mean Ruz in red granite at the harbour entrance, rebuilt in 1948. Maison du littoral at Squewel headland explains the geology of the 300 million year old granite.

History

The Château de Costaérès on the island was built between 1892 and 1896 by the Polish engineer Bruno Abakanowicz. The Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz, Nobel laureate for Quo Vadis, stayed there as a guest.
