Approach and anchoring
Tidal river, navigation tied to the flood stream. Mud bottom, good holding but plan swinging room for reversing current. Sheltered from NE, E and SE winds; exposed to westerlies funnelling up the valley. Channel marked all the way from the Pointe de la Fumée.
Practical
Club moorings reserved for members; visitors anchor in the stream. Port Adhoc Soubise is 1,3 nm south with full services, Rochefort bassin à flot 1,7 nm upriver through the lock.
Ashore
Corderie Royale of Louis XIV at Rochefort, built from 1666 for the royal dockyard, is 1,7 nm upstream. Hermione frigate replica moored at the former naval arsenal.
History
Rochefort was founded as a naval dockyard by Colbert in 1666 on the orders of Louis XIV. The Charente carried timber and rigging to the arsenal for more than two centuries.
